8 Tips to Plan Your Sunrise Elopement at Lago Di Braies

vow exchange in the dolomites

Are you dreaming of a breathtaking elopement surrounded by the towering peaks and serene lakes of the Dolomites? Let me take you on a journey through a recent shoot in this stunning region, with KEY tips along the way, showcasing what your own experience with me could look like. Because you want to know what the actual experience will be like, right? How else will you decide to elope at Lago Di Braies and get going on planning!?

Ready? Let’s go. (Summary of tips at the end!)

Begin in Brunico

Our adventure starts in the charming town of Brunico (also known as Bruneck in German). With an early 4am wake-up call, we set out to capture the soft, ethereal light of dawn. Trust me, getting up early will be worth it! Sexten would also be a great alternative base to start from. A quick 30-minute drive takes us to our first breathtaking location.

Best Time for a Tranquil Vow Exchange at Lago Di Braies

Lago Di Braies (or Brasger Wildersee in German) is CROWDED during the day, so we made sure to be there by sunrise. Parking for the entire day is just 8 euros at the second carpark from the lake (as of June 2024), making it convenient for a full-day adventure.

The crystal-clear waters reflect the majestic mountains, creating a perfect backdrop for intimate and dreamy photos. We spend two magical hours here, taking advantage of the tranquil morning light before the crowds arrive.

TIP: Visiting on a weekday between October and May can be quieter than in the summer months. The photos featured in this blog were shot in May.

Eloping in Europe

Before we continue on our journey around Lago Di Braies, a quick note on the legalities! If you’re looking to elope in Europe, be sure to check that your country recognises the marriage license from the country you’re eloping in! You might want to get legally married in your home country and do a vow exchange for your overseas elopement. (Fun fact: New Zealand marriage licenses are recognised worldwide, and finding a celebrant for your elopement ceremony is fairly straightforward! I can even recommend you one :) )

The Boathouse and Boat Rental

If you’re looking for an exclusive experience, The Boathouse and the dock are available for exclusive hire 1.5 hours before the official boat rental hours begin each day. This includes the rental of two wooden boats. For exact pricing, dates and online booking, check out La Palafitta, the official dock and boat rental website. There’s only one slot available per day for the exclusive hire of the Boathouse.

Alternatively, you could hire a boat only, but it would be once they officially open, so other tourists will be on the lake. Each boat can take up to 5 people. Note: You CANNOT reserve a boat.

But if neither of you are particularly keen on getting in a boat, let me remind you - you can make your elopement experience whatever you like! For example, there are hiking trails around the lake with gorgeous spots for photos, and you don’t need to worry about a special booking or permit.

chapel by bragser wildersee for elopements

The Chapel

Built in 1904, this beautiful chapel stands near the end of the lake path. But it’s not just a cute chapel! During World War II, 137 political prisoners were brought there from German concentration camps by the SS commander in chief who hoped to exchange them for his own safety. The rich history and Romanesque architecture of the chapel adds a unique touch to your elopement experience. There’s just something about a building that has stood the test of time! Two hundred and twenty years, to be exact! If you haven’t already exchanged vows at the lake, this would be a great spot to do just that.

Hidden gem in the dolomite alps for your elopement

Discovering Hidden Gems

Next, we venture to a secret location nearby the lake, just 10 minutes from the road and super accessible even with the wedding dress. This hidden gem offers an open yet secluded setting, perfect for frolicking in, riding the high of having exchanged vows with your forever-person, and capturing intimate moments away from the hustle and bustle. We spend 30 minutes here, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Beautiful Locations for a Wedding Shoot at Sunset

As the day progresses, Parco Naturale Tre Cime or Cadini di Misurina would be perfect locations for an unforgettable sunset session. The golden hues of the setting sun cast a warm glow on the iconic peaks, providing a dramatic and awe-inspiring backdrop. This is the perfect time to capture those timeless, romantic photos that you will cherish forever.

Accommodation Recommendations

For those looking to extend their stay, I highly recommend the Bad Moos Hotel for a romantic stay. Its luxurious amenities and stunning views make it an ideal base for your Dolomites adventure. Alternatively, there is also accommodation available by the lake, offering convenience and picturesque surroundings.

Summary of Key Tips

I always advise couples to be flexible on their big day, because not everything will go exactly to plan. BUT there are key things to note if you’re planning to elope at Lago Di Braies. Did you catch them all?

  1. Plan to be at the lake by sunrise

  2. Go during “off-season” (between October and May) on a weekday, to ensure fellow tourists are not crowding in on your photos (you will meet a few fellow couples though!)

  3. Be prepared to pay for parking

  4. Check the legal requirements of your country/state for your marriage

  5. For a truly exclusive experience, hire the Boathouse (includes rental of two boats)

  6. Arrange a sunset shoot with your photographer
